Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Project in Northern Ghana

The goal of the project is to increase productive capacity for sustainable livelihoods in the three Northern Regions, especially in the most deprived districts by 2010. In order to achieve this, the project adopted the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach to provide a platform for communities to analyze the relationship between their assets, vulnerabilities, activities, outcomes, structures and processes for appropriate decision making on their development.
The core concepts of Sustainable Livelihoods include People-centered, Holistic, Dynamic, Building on strengths (assets), Macro-micro links, and Sustainability. Multisectoral fieldworkers’ teams, consisting of local government institutions and various sector ministries at the district level, facilitate community-driven development with community members through holistic, participatory and asset-based approaches. Capacity development of local partners at community, district, and regional levels as well as partnership with various partners are being sought so as to enhance sustainable livelihoods in Northern Ghana.
The Implementing Partner of this project is Africa 2000 Network (A2N), a local community-based Civil Society Organization which was launched in 1989. With the vision of ensuring that Africans live in harmony and that they enjoy sustainable livelihoods, A2N is currently operational in 12 African countries including Ghana. In this project, A2N is facilitating the efforts at the regional-, district-, and community-levels. UNDP supports various local efforts through assisting A2N in overall management and implementation. The partnership with other UN agencies including UNICEF, WFP, FAO, UNIDO, UNU and UNV as well as other development partners has been building so as to contribute various expertise and support in various forms to the holistic initiatives.
