UNDP DONATES THREE MOTOR BIKES TO GHANA STATISTICAL SERVICE

These motorbikes will boost the mobility of the Ministry’s extension service, which is critical to the success of UNDP’s support in planning, data production and management as well as resource mobilization and management said UNDP Country Director, Kamil Kamalludeen.

27th April, 2010, Accra: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) yesterday donated 3 motorbikes to Ghana Statistical Service as part of its commitment to support regional level staff.
“This donation underlines the cooperation between UNDP and the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and UNDP looks forward to collaborating further this year”.The Country Director said.

He added that UNDP sees GSS as a strategic partner in development because no development work could be effective without reliable data

He said UNDP’s long standing relationship with GSS has yielded outcomes such as the Ghana Statistical Development Plan, the roadmap to achieving a stronger and efficient data system in Ghana.

He reiterated that UNDP has supported GSS over the past years through Annual Work Plans (AWPs) in addition to these regular efforts to support the production of quality data in a timely manner for development planning, monitoring and evaluation. In 2009, UNDP supported the trial census for the 2010 National Population Census with the sum of $150, 000

Receiving the motorbikes on behalf of GSS, the Government Statistician Dr Grace Bediako expressed appreciation for the logistical support from UNDP, noting that the modest contribution of three motorbikes for the regional offices in Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions are expected to facilitate commuting the daily GSS routine work  as well as enhance data collection for the upcoming Population Census

She said ‘Modest as they may be, it is her hope that the three motor bikes will contribute to the government’s efforts of producing reliable Census data’.
